In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word is –KADASH i.e To cut or separate.

The New Testament – Grk word is HAGIZO i.e To set apart for a special task. To be dedicated or consecrated to. To place in a relation with God answering to His Holiness.

Just as :

• A fish to swim
Christians are called to:
i. Walk in the light –John8:12; 1John 1:5-7

ii. In justification, we are declared righteous so that through sanctification, we may become righteous.-Rom.6:14, Phil.2:12
iii. Justification is what God does for us, sanctification is what God does in us. –Rom.8:13
iv. Justification puts in a right relationship with God, while sanctification shows the fruit of that relationship i.e a life separated from the sinful world and dedicated to God.-Matth.3:8
v. Sanctification is more than a mere moral or character change it is separation from evil and dedication to God. – Gal.1:13-16

viii. The opposite of sanctification is profane – Lev.10:10

B.THE HOW OF SANCTIFICATION

We are sanctified by The Father (1Cor.1:30) through the power of the Holy Spirit (2Thess.2:13, 1Pet.1:2) and it is done in name of Jesus 1Cor.6:11).
There three (3) phases of our sanctification viz:
– At the new birth – the blood of Jesus sanctifies – Heb.13:2
– Daily or progressive sanctification through faith in Jesus Christ and the working of the in dwelling Holy Spirit – 2Cor.3:18
– Full sanctification at the resurrection – 1John 1:8-10

C. OUR RESPONSIBILITY IN SANCTIFIATION

– Holy living 2 Cor.7:11
– Be responsible about our Christian walk-Philli.2:12-13,2Pet.1:10,Gal.6:7-9
– Growth in sanctification by living according to our new identity – 2Cor.3:18, 2Cor.5:17.-Rom.12:1-2

D. RESULTS OF SANCTIFICATION
• Christ likeness – John 8:12
• Deeper fellowship with God – Amos.3:3; Gen.5:24
• Release the power of God in our lives- Rom.1:4
