WHAT IS HONOUR (continued)

Text: 1Sam.2:30, Mal.1:6

7 There we were, binding sheaves in the field. Then behold, my sheaf arose and also stood

upright; and indeed your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”

8 And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have

dominion over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

9 Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have

dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon, and the eleven stars bowed down to

me.”

Gen 41:39-40

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as

discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled

according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”

2. You cannot honour what or who you don’t know. 2kings 17:25-29,32-33; Isa.6:1-6

25 And it was so, at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they did not fear the Lord ;

therefore the Lord sent lions among them, which killed some of them. 26 So they spoke to the

king of Assyria, saying, “The nations whom you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria

do not know the rituals of the God of the land; therefore He has sent lions among them, and

indeed, they are killing them because they do not know the rituals of the God of the land.” 27

Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, “Send there one of the priests whom you brought

from there; let him go and dwell there, and let him teach them the rituals of the God of the

land.” 28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in

Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the Lord .

29 However every nation continued to make gods of its own, and put them in the shrines on the

high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in the cities where they dwelt.

2 Kings 17:32-33

So they feared the Lord , and from every class they appointed for themselves priests of the

high places, who sacrificed for them in the shrines of the high places. 33 They feared the Lord

, yet served their own gods — according to the rituals of the nations from among whom they were

carried away.

3. The readiness or ease to honour is a measure of your heart condition.

A humble and submissive heart will always honour.Pro.15:33;18:12; 22:4; 27:18; 29:23

Prov 15:33

33 The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,

And before honor is humility.

Prov 18:12

12 Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty,

And before honor is humility.

Prov 22:4

4 By humility and the fear of the Lord. Are riches and honor and life.

Prov 27:18

18 Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit;

So he who waits on his master will be honored.

Prov 29:23

23 A man’s pride will bring him low,But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

4. Honour begat honour 1Sam2:30

30 Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your

father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who

honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed

5. Honour can be learned or taught.Deut.4:10,Psm132:12;Prov 22:6,Eph 6:1-3

Deut 4:10

10 especially concerning the day you stood before the Lord your God in Horeb, when the Lord

said to me, ‘Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words, that they may learn to

fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.’

Ps 132:12

2 If your sons will keep My covenant

And My testimony which I shall teach them,

Their sons also shall sit upon your throne forevermore.”

Prov 22:6

6 Train up a child in the way he should go,

And when he is old he will not depart from it.

Eph 6:1-3

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,”

which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live

long on the earth.”*

6. Honour is both external and internal Isa.29:13

13 Therefore the Lord said:”Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths. And honor Me

with their lips,But have removed their hearts far from Me,And their fear toward Me is taught by

the commandment of men,

7. The foundation of true honour is love Deut.6:4-9; 1Sam.7:3

Deut 6:4-9

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!* 5 You shall love the Lord your God with

all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them

diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk

by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your

hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts

of your house and on your gates.

1 Sam 7:3

3 Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all

your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths* from among you, and prepare

your hearts for the Lord , and serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the

Philistines.”
