A Mother’s Day Sermon: A Message of Hope and Faith

Today we celebrate Mother’s Day—a time to honor and appreciate the incredible role of mothers. Whether you’re a mom, grandmother, spiritual mother, or someone who plays a nurturing role in someone’s life, we want to say: thank you.

Motherhood is a sacred calling. And one thing we know for sure: one godly mother can make a huge difference in our world.

In this Mother’s Day sermon, we’ll explore the story of a strong, faith-filled woman—a wife and mother—who stood firm in the face of overwhelming challenges. Her story, found in 2 Kings 4 : 1–7, isn’t just historical; it’s deeply personal, practical, and profoundly inspiring.

Her Situation: A Story Many Can Relate To

Let’s be honest—life can feel overwhelming. And while we gather to celebrate moms today, we also recognize that many women are dealing with silent struggles, emotional pain, financial hardship, or feelings of inadequacy. This woman’s story captures those feelings perfectly.

We all can relate to this woman’s conditions in one way or another. She faced:

  • Personal Pain (Widow) – No husband, so she is grieving. Tragedy had struck her.
The problem of life doesn’t excuse your pain.
  • Financial Crisis – The creditors were coming to collect.
    People don’t forgive your debts.
  • Domestic Nightmare – She was about to lose her children.
Implication: For a widow in Israel at the time, her children were her hope for the future. She could have endured any hardship for a promising future, but not this.

When Hope Feels Like It’s Slipping Away

What would you do when your last hope is forcefully taken away, or you get disappointed because of the wickedness of men? This is not just a question that this woman faced —it’s a question many of us have faced at some point.

She also endured:

  • The Importance of Hope – There is a need for:
  • Faith
  • An anchor for the soul
  • The strength to live through a bad day or bad experience
  • Social Stigma – Because of the debt, people tended to treat her with disrespect.
When you owe people, they tend to devalue you.
  • Spiritual Disappointment – A man of God died without solving his family’s financial problem, so she came to the man of God with all these problems.

Turning Point: She Knew Where to Go

Here’s where the story takes a turn: she knew where to go.

Even though she was likely disillusioned, disappointed, and discouraged, she still recognized the God factor in her life. She didn’t allow her pain to separate her from her source—God.

This alone is a powerful message for every mom today: you don’t have to have all the answers—you just need to know where to go. Run to God. Pour out your heart in prayer. Seek His wisdom through His Word.

Two Life-Changing Questions

Her encounter with Elisha led to two key questions:

  1. “What shall I do for you?”
  2. “What do you have?”

Think about that. In life, the questions you choose to respond to will determine the answers you get.

This woman wisely chose to answer the second question.

“I have nothing but a jar of oil.”

As insignificant as that jar seemed, it was the key to her breakthrough. What seemed like not enough was more than enough in the hands of God.

Three Things to Note

  • She realized she had something
  • It was in her house
  • It was readily available and could be used

Her connection with the man of God opened her eyes to the resource she already had. Often, the miracle you need isn’t “out there.” It’s already in your possession—you just need divine perspective to see it.

Elisha gives her instructions, and she responds in obedience.

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:13
For this reason, we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
  • Hosea 12:13
By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved.
  • 2 Chronicles 20:20
So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”

A Divine Instruction

Verse 3 of the focus passage text:
“Go borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few.”

God’s instruction required action, faith, and humility. Imagine going around to your neighbors borrowing jars, not fully knowing why. But she did it.

Three Key Elements at play in This Mother’s Day Sermon

Here’s where everything comes together:

  • The jar of oil – Symbolic of what she already had
  • Empty vessels from her neighbours – Symbolic of preparation and capacity
  • The word of God as the instruction from the man of God – The divine directive

Without any one of these three, the miracle might not have happened.

Faith-Filled Obedience Brings Overflow

She poured out the oil behind closed doors, and as long as there were vessels, the oil kept flowing. It only stopped when there were no more vessels left.

This speaks volumes to us about the importance of obedience, preparation, and faith. What if she had only borrowed a few vessels? Her miracle would have been limited to her expectations.

God’s Provision is Always Enough

Then came the final word:

“Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”

Make sure when you leave, your family does not suffer.
Sell and pay your debt, and live on the rest. So you don’t get back to the jar status.

What a beautiful picture of God’s provision. Not only did He cover the debt, He made sure there was enough to live on. That’s the kind of God we serve!

Encouragement for Every Mother

So, to every mother listening or reading today:

  • You are seen.
  • You are valued.
  • You are stronger than you know.
  • You are not alone.

Even if you’re facing your own version of this widow’s dilemma—grief, debt, loss, single parenting, emotional burnout—God sees you. He cares. And He can multiply the little you have into more than enough.

Mother’s Day Sermon: Final Thoughts

This Mother’s Day sermon reminds us that even in our most desperate moments, God is always able to meet our needs. Your jar of oil—no matter how small it seems—can be the seed of your next miracle. So, never underestimate the power of a mother who places her trust in God.
