HONOUR – THE ROAD TO HONOUR

Text: 1Sam.2:30, Mal.1:6

1 Sam 2:30

30 Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your

father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who

honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.

Mal 1:6

6 “A son honors his father, And a servant his master. If then I am the Father, Where is My

honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the Lord of hosts. To you priests who

despise My name. Yet you say, ‘In what way have we despised Your name?’

INTRO:

There is a road that leads to honour and on it there are at least seven mile stones that I wish

to draw our attention to. There may be more but its very important that we pay attention to

these seven. They are:

i. In giving or receiving honour, knowledge’s very important

ii. Choose to honour

iii. Determine to honour

iv. Humility comes before honour

v. To receive honour, you must give honour

vi. Let honour come naturally or at its own time

vii. Honour the son

I will attempt to discuss each of their milestones with the particular bias of honouring God.

MILESTONE

1. Knowledge – 1Sam.2:12,

12 Now the sons of Eli were corrupt;* they did not know the Lord.

Isa 5:12-17

12 The harp and the strings, The tambourine and flute, And wine are in their feasts; But they

do not regard the work of the Lord, Nor consider the operation of His hands.

13 Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their

honorable men are famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst.

14 Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself And opened its mouth beyond measure; Their glory and

their multitude and their pomp, And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.

15 People shall be brought down, Each man shall be humbled, And the eyes of the lofty shall be

humbled.

16 But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, And God who is holy shall be hallowed in

righteousness.

17 Then the lambs shall feed in their pasture, And in the waste places of the fat ones

strangers shall eat.

a. We must know we have been called to live a life of honour –I Pet.2:17-18

17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but

also to the harsh.

b. It our responsibility to discover how we are to honour – Particularly God

· God wanted King Solomon to know that He was more interested in his obedience than in

the fine or beautiful edifice Solomon was building – Ikings 6:11-14

11 Then the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying: 12 “Concerning this temple which you are

building, if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk

in them, then I will perform My word with you, which I spoke to your father David. 13 And I

will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake My people Israel.”

14 So Solomon built the temple and finished it.

· In giving God Honour every part of us must be involved.

– Thoughts, words & deeds – Psm.19:14

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart. Be acceptable in Your sight,O Lord,

my strength and my Redeemer.

– Our possession – Elisha in Ikings 19:19-21

19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve

yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his

mantle on him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my

father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”

And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”

21 So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and boiled

their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose

and followed Elijah, and became his servant.

– Making every effort to become who He has called us to be – ICor.15:9-10.

9 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I

persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward

me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of

God which was with me.

2. CHOOSE TO HONOUR

Choice implies making an option or opinion more important than an alternative. It involves

elimination and preference.

– Reuben/Bilhar – Gen.35:22,

22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his

father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

IChro.5:1

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel — he was indeed the firstborn, but because he

defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so

that the genealogy is not listed according to the birthright;

– Joseph/Potiphar – Gen.39:7-9;

7 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph,

and she said, “Lie with me.”

8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me

in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 There is no one greater in

this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How

then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

41:39-40

39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as

discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled

according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you.”

– Moses/Egypt – Heb.11:24-27

24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,

25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing

pleasures of sin, 26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in*

Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him

who is invisible.

3. DETERMINE TO HONOUR

Determination speaks of adding action to a decision/choice. You start by taking the first step
you know and keep going until your next and stay on until you finish. See King Solomon.
