Flourishing in Faith bible passage text: 2 Peter 3:18.
Flourishing in Faith Introduction
To reach the dimensions God has prepared for you, especially in this season, you must be ready to grow and develop yourself intentionally. Faith is not static; it is designed to flourish when nurtured. This growth isn’t simply about achieving spiritual “height,” but about taking deep roots in Christ that produce long-lasting fruit and stability.
"Taking root downward, flourishing and multiplying all point toward your establishment."
The Biblical Foundation for Flourishing
2 Peter 3:18
"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
This passage emphasizes the expectation that we grow in grace and understanding. Just as a tree’s height is determined by the depth of its roots, so also is our spiritual strength determined by how deeply rooted we are in Christ.
Matthew 7:24-27 illustrates that the house built on the rock (depth) withstands storms.
Supporting Scriptures:
- Luke 2:40 – “The child grew… and the grace of God was upon Him.”
- Ephesians 3:16-19 – That you may be strengthened with might and rooted in love.
Depth for Height: The Principle of Rooted Growth
To flourish in faith, you must embrace the principle of depth for height.
What is “Depth”?
According to various dictionaries, depth includes:
- Distance from the top downward
- Richness and intensity of color or emotion
- Understanding, competence, and thoroughness
- Intellectual ability and insight
What is “Height”?
- Elevation or distance from base to top
- The highest level or degree attainable
- A peak or apex
The Relationship Between Depth and Height
Without growing downwards (taking root), there can be no true height, no flourishing, and no fruitfulness.
Colossians 2:7 (NLT)
"Let your roots grow down into Christ and draw up nourishment from Him."
Growth must be intentional. It doesn’t happen automatically. It requires decision, commitment, and ongoing effort.
The Process of Growing in Faith
1. Decide to Grow
Make a personal decision to no longer remain stagnant in your walk with God.
2. Make an Effort to Grow
Put structures in place—daily devotion, Bible study, Christian fellowship, and mentoring.
3. Continue Growing Daily
Spiritual growth is a continual process, not a one-time event.
Four Areas of Personal Growth
According to Luke 2:52, Jesus grew in:
a. Wisdom – Intellectual Development
Study. Learn. Meditate on God’s Word and apply it to daily living.
b. Stature – Physical Development
Take care of your health and body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
c. Favour with God – Spiritual Development
Deepen your relationship with God through prayer, fasting, worship, and obedience.
d. Favour with Man – Social and Emotional Development
Build relationships that reflect the love and grace of God. Practice empathy, forgiveness, and kindness.
Spiritual Development: Growing into Christlikeness
Key Scriptures:
- Ephesians 4:14-15
- Colossians 1:10; 2:7
- 2 Peter 1:5-8
Principles for Spiritual Growth
- Integrate faith into every area of your life
- Aim to become more Christlike in character and behavior
- Let God take control of every compartment of your life
Don’t compare your journey with others. Each believer is on a unique path of growth.
Self-Examination Questions:
- Am I growing in wisdom?
- Am I improving emotionally and relationally?
- How is my spiritual life and devotion?
- Do I take care of my physical health?
Growing Roots, Not Just Branches
Flourishing in faith isn’t just about showing up on Sundays meetings—it’s about building something deeper and more lasting. This matters because real spiritual growth happens when faith becomes more than a normal spiritual checklist. It becomes a relationship and a lifestyle—a daily connection with God that influences how we think, speak, and live.
Think about a tree. You don’t see the roots, but without them, the branches don’t thrive.
In the same way, our faith can’t flourish if it’s only surface-level. For example, someone might attend church programmes weekly but still feel spiritually dry because they haven’t cultivated daily spiritual habits like prayer and bible study.
When we focus on relationship with God and embrace a lifestyle that reflects Him, that’s when our faith starts to flourish. It’s not about being perfect, but being rooted in Christ And over time, those deep roots produce peace, purpose, and strength—even in tough seasons.
The Power of Renewed Thinking For Flourishing in faith
Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)
"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
- Growth starts with a change in mindset.
- Think like Christ: Philippians 2:5 (CEV) – “Think the same way that Christ Jesus thought.”
Avoid immature thinking:
- Self-centeredness – 1 Corinthians 14:20
- Childishness – 1 Corinthians 13:11 (NIV)
Christianity goes beyond clichés and creeds—it’s about character and conduct. Your actions must align with your beliefs. Losing money or things is recoverable—but losing character is a true loss.
Christianity: A Relationship, Not a Religion
Christianity is not a religion—it is a relationship and a lifestyle.
Thinking more of others is a Christlike mindset:
Romans 15:2-3
"Each of us should please our neighbors for their good… For even Christ did not please Himself."
This others-centered mindset is the best indicator of spiritual maturity. True flourishing begins when we are rooted in Christ, enabling us to:
- Bear spiritual fruit
- Withstand storms
- Radiate God’s grace and wisdom
Final Encouragement: Flourishin In faith
You cannot reach spiritual heights without deeply rooting in Christ. Like a tree that stands strong in a storm, your life must be grounded in the truth of God’s Word. Then—and only then—can you grow, flourish, and multiply.
Colossians 2:7 – "Let your roots grow down into Christ and draw up nourishment from Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth… and you will overflow with thankfulness."
Therefore, let your roots go down deep in the Lord, so your spiritual fruits may rise up strong.
