Breakthrough sermon passage text: Psalms 124:7
“Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped”.
INTRODUCTION – BREAKTHROUGH SERMON
The verse above gives a wonderful picture of what is called a breakthrough. Imagine the scene of a bird that has been caged. It has become limited; even though it could travel for miles in the sky freely. It has been reduced to a creature that cannot move past 1 foot upwards and downwards.
Only God knows for how long it has been in the cage suddenly, a particular power comes and breaks the cage open and the bird escapes. This is the picture of a breakthrough.
Therefore, a breakthrough by the Holy Spirit will always be a major advancement in life. It will come in whatever you need at that moment. It may be in your mind or in your finances. It may be in a relationship, but you cannot receive your breakthrough without expectation because expectation produces hope, excitement, and anticipation. We can, however, have great expectations, but we also need to take responsibility for them.
What Is A Breakthrough?
(1) A Breakthrough is a major advancement in your life. Psm.18:19 He also brought me out into a broad place; He delivered me because He delighted in me.
· It may be an advancement in your career…in your home…with your spouse, son, daughter, or loved one who is away from the Lord
· It may be a Breakthrough in your mind or emotions, something in your temperament or personality.
· A need for a breakthrough in some personal struggle that maybe no one else knows about, but you and God. Maybe the breakthrough you are asking for is for more of God’s anointing, divine wisdom, or for a greater revelation of who He is.
In Mark 5:25-2925 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” 29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction.
She believed she would be healed. She moved toward
Jesus. She anticipated a miracle and it happened! It was the greatest spiritual
breakthrough of her life.

Breakthrough sermon illustration
In this breakthrough sermon series, please, be reminded that God is not a failure; therefore, we, His children, should not be failures.
(1) God did not design anyone to come to this world and fail. Any failure we find in our lives is not the fault of God.
(2) It is a serious progress.1Chron.12:21-22 “And they helped David against the bands of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor, and they were captains in the army. 22 For at that time they came to David day by day to help him, until it was a great army, like the army of God. 2Chron.26:15 And he made devices in Jerusalem, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the corners, to shoot arrows and large stones. So his fame spread far and wide, for he was marvelously helped till he became strong.
It is possible for a person to progress but not in an appreciable way. If a person wants to go to Ibadan and sets out on foot, he would be moving, which means he or she is making progress but it is a slow one. Breakthrough is serious progress and advancement.
(3) Breakthrough is a positive boost. Psm.18:31-34 “31 For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 32 It is God who arms me with strength, And makes my way perfect. 33 He makes my feet like the feet of deer And sets me on my high places. 34 He teaches my hands to make war so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.”
You could be doing well and you start doing better. It is a forward development and an important discovery. You could have been on one spot for years and you do not know what is going wrong. All of a sudden, God opens your eyes to see what it is. A person could have had issues or delays for a long time then, one day, God opens his eyes to see what is wrong.
(4) Breakthrough is breaking through a barrier, which the Psalmist calls “Jumping over a wall.” Psm.18:29. For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall.
It is when you penetrate your enemy’s defense. They have been trying to keep you out but all of a sudden, you move in.
(5) It is an anointed increase, Psm.18:35-37 “35 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation; Your right hand has held me up, Your gentleness has made me great. 36 You enlarged my path under me, So my feet did not slip. 37 I have pursued my enemies and overtaken them; Neither did I turn back again till they were destroyed.
That which will make people wonder what is happening to you, it is being lifted above all the enemies round about you. It is promotion enrichment, and betterment. It is a positive headway.
(6) Breakthrough is a radical expansion Psm.18:43; 43 Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
66:12(KJV) 12 Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water: but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.
An exceptional maximization; an enlargement, a turning point. It is when you are going the way of poverty and all of a sudden, there is a turning point. It is when you are going the way of frustration and all of a sudden, there is a turnaround. It is when the doctor’s diagnosis spells doom, and you do not know that doctors do not have the last say; suddenly, there is a turnaround for the best and the doctors are now surprised.
(7) It is winning the battles of life Psm.18: 38-42 38 I have wounded them So that they could not rise; They have fallen under my feet. 39 For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. 40 You have also given me the necks of my enemies So that I destroyed those who hated me. 41 They cried out, but there was none to save; Even to the Lord, but He did not answer them. 42 Then I beat them as fine as the dust before the wind; I cast them out like dirt in the streets.
Beloved, you and I have been called to a battle; whether you like it or not, you are on the battlefront. Whether you believe it or not, war has been declared against you. If you say that you have never offended anyone, to warrant hostility against you, then I would ask you, if Jesus offended anybody, to warrant the treatment that He received from the Jews.
Anti-Breakthrough powers
They are powers that are saying ‘NO’ to your breakthroughs. They operate through:
· Hindering you from moving forward.
· Introducing doubts about God’s love and intervention in people’s situations.
· They are powers that have formed a covenant to resist you.

· They are powers that are designated to limit and stagnate progress.
